52 Week Preschool Reading Challenge

Since we are avid readers and go to the library all the time, I thought it would be fun to introduce a 52-week preschool reading challenge to my kids.

The best way to encourage kids to read and help them find things that they enjoy reading (or being read) is to introduce them to a variety of options. I am attracted to different children’s books than what my kids would sometimes choose, and they each have different opinions on what books they like. One thing I like to do is take my kids to the library and have them pick out the books they would like to read that week. They will often gravitate towards the same books that they know, but sometimes they pick something new and it’s fun to see whether they will like it or not.

How it works:

Each week, go to the library or pick through your books at home, and find at least one picture book the relates to the item on the list. Since we read a couple of books a night, we will be picking a few books that match the theme each week but feel free to choose however many you’d like. Once you’ve finished the week, you move onto the next one.

I tried to pick fun themes that would not only provide different reading options but would also open up chances for discussion on different topics. I’ve also provided a free printable reading tracker below to help keep you on track.
