Hi! It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these reading wrap-ups. I haven’t been doing as much reading lately because I’ve been focusing on getting my manuscript finished, but I read some really good books in August that I wanted to share with you all.

August Reading Wrap Up

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Hardcover BOTM)
The Library of Legends by Janie Chang (Hardcover BOTM)
The Diviners by Libba Bray (Audiobook through Libby)

Favorite Reads This Month

This may be cheating, but I couldn’t pick a favorite this month. Also, it’s my blog, so I get to make the rules and I’m deciding they are all favorites.

  • Mexican Gothic is a beautifully haunting and atmospheric story that takes place in 1950s Mexico. I am a huge Silvia Moreno-Garcia fan, so this one was an auto-buy for me and it didn’t disappoint. Noemi is such a strong-headed and interesting character, and I love the way she interacted with the family at High Place. The story was both captivating and terrifying. There are so many unique concepts and I can’t wait to see what Hulu does with this story. Seriously, read this one, and if you haven’t yet, read her other novel Gods of Jade and Shadow. Both are amazing.
  • The Library of Legends is a wonderful historical fantasy that takes place in 1930s China and follows a group of university students who have to flee their school when war breaks out. Janie Chang does a beautiful job mixing in mysticism and folklore into a story about war and politics. I learned so much about a piece of history that I knew nothing about and was taken on an enchanting and heartbreaking adventure. It has romance and murder and mythology. I highly recommend reading this one, especially if you have an interest in Chinese folklore.
  • The Diviners is a book that I have owned for years but seemed to somehow slip my mind until a friend’s recommendation brought it back to my attention. Libba Bray is a beautiful writer and her Gemma Doyle series is one of the books that sparked my love for YA fantasy. Even though I own the hardcover version of The Diviners, I decided to borrow the audiobook through Libby so I could listen to it in the car and I LOVE January LaVoy’s narration of this story. It is a historical, paranormal fantasy, set in 1920s New York City. The story follows a group of characters, some with magical abilities, as the try to piece together clues about a mystery killing. Evie is wonderful and I am definitely team Sam. It’s got ghosts and murder and magic, and you should absolutely read it if you haven’t.
