Tips For Organizing Your Day + Prioritizing Your To-do List

I am a list maker, idea jotter, and calendar penciler, which always makes me feel super organized, yet none of those things are ever in the same place. I have important things to remember written on everything from note pads to note cards to scraps of paper that are torn off of the envelopes of bills. On top of that, I complete tasks as they come to mind. I can sit down to work on a post and then get up twenty times to do the dishes, get the kids a snack, check the laundry, check my email, or whatever other task pops into my head. This leads to me ending the day feeling like I was too busy to accomplish all that I needed to get done, but also not really getting anything done at all.

A couple of months ago, I made it a point to get organized. Between working from home, homeschooling, and trying to write my book, my days felt overwhelmed. I refused to believe that I couldn’t both support my family and pursue a dream, so I found a planner that had exactly what I needed, implemented a few methods. and came up with some tips for organizing my day.

Golden Coil sent me this planner in exchange for my honest review. I love the look and feel of this planner and that I was able to customize it to my needs. I was able to add a weekly assignments page for Finley’s homeschooling, a monthly social media page, and weekly meal planning page. I also added pages for brainstorming and passwords. I use my Golden Coil planner along with a daily list pad to keep my days organized.

I love that I was able to add an assignments section in my Golden Coil planner for Fin’s schooling.

Create A Schedule and Stick To It

Like making a list when you go to the grocery store can keep you from impulse buys, scheduling out your day can help keep you on track. As a single mom of two who works at home, this has become essential. Making a schedule takes a to-do list and turns it into a plan. I started scheduling everything from blog posts to doctors appoints to what we are eating that day and it has made all the difference.

Time Blocking

Time blocking is the practice of scheduling out everything¬†in your entire day to better manage your time. I started using time blocking when I decided to start homeschooling Finley on top of working at home. To make sure my days didn’t feel cluttered and that time didn’t slip away from me, I sat down and allotted time to each task I needed to get done. Homeschooling, housework, work, writing, even personal time is all blocked out.

I don’t completely block out every hour of my day like some people do because I know that wouldn’t work for me. My days get hectic, even with scheduling, and I need some flexibility in my schedule. Seeing a completely scheduled out day would stress me out, but knowing I have allotted time for that things that need to be done gets me in the right mindset and helps my kids with structure as well.

Create A Top 3

You can’t get it all done in a day.

This was a hard lesson for me to swallow, but you really can’t do it all. So instead of stressing about each thing that must be done, select three items on your to-do list and make those your priority. Get those items done before doing anything else, no matter how quick or easy other tasks may seem, and your list will feel much lighter by the end of the day.

Color Coding

Color coding your planner or calendar helps give you a snapshot of your day in a quick glance. There are many different ways to break up your color categories. I’ve seen people use different colors for different people, which is great if you are doing the planning for everyone in the house, but since it’s just me and the littles I keep things pretty simple. I have four categories: work, household, kids, and other. I use this method together with time blocking to schedule out my day.

Meal Planning

Meal planning has not only saved me time, but it has helped save money as well. We get produce delivered once a week from Imperfect Produce. I can customize what produce I will see in my box each week, based on what they have available in my area. After I know what products we are getting, I plan our meals around that. The day the produce is delivered I spend about an hour pre-chopping the vegetables for the week, and any vegetables that don’t get used that week are frozen, so they don’t go to waste.

If you are interested in trying out Imperfect Produce, using my referral link, here, will save you $10 on your first box, which is about 50% off.
